How to earn 7% per annum on your cash and beat annual inflation

Investment Opportunity?

In the past you could put your cash in a bank account and earn a rate of interest that was higher than the annual rate of inflation. In 2008 this changed and since then the bank interest rates have been lower than the inflation rate.

The chart below shows this relationship between inflation and Bank of England base interest rates and how it changed in 2008/9.

Today your cash left in a bank account will be worth less in 12 months than it is worth today. Because the rate of inflation is higher than the interest rates paid in bank accounts your cash is losing value every year it is left in a bank account. At this moment in time the annual rate of inflation is about 1.5% (March 2020) and banks are paying interest rates of up to about 1.2% per annum (Source: Moneywise). So, your cash will be worth 0.3% less in one year than it is today.

Of course, you could invest your money in the stock market which may appear attractive at this moment in time however unless you study and get to thoroughly understand the sector you are investing your money in then you are gambling your money. Further more at this moment in time investors such as Warren Buffet seem to be holding off in investing because they seem to be expecting things to get worse before they get better. With the stock market knowledge and timing are everything. Even if investing in the stock market appeals to you now does appear to be the right time.
